Given that the essential function of a retaining wall is to restrain the movement of earth down a slope, extra care must be taken during the construction process in order to avoid a gradual failure of the wall due to the force of thousands of pounds of shifting matter. This particular wall had begun to bow severely outward, and was misshapen to such an extent that multiple types of hardware were required to fully stabilize it. In addition, before work on the wall could even start, the area had to be cleared of trees and debris, including a patch of poison ivy that presented its own unique challenge to the installation crew.
Bedlam Concrete Lifting installed ten FSI Model 150 Helical Anchors across the wall's face, and an additional anchor perpendicular to the rest on the wall's corner. The anchors were uniformly spaced ten feet apart, and driven slightly downward at an angle of 20 degrees to horizontal. Each anchor was fitted to the wall with a vertical seven-foot C-channel section, and each of these beams was anchored to the ground in front of the wall with a 14-by-14-inch, 16-inch-deep concrete column.
