What causes a wet basement?

Even without standing water or heavy rains it is possible to have water issues in your basement. While the water coming through a crack in the floor might be the most obvious sign, it's only a symptom and not the real cause of your basement's water problem. Instead water in the basement is generally due to a combination of the clay bowl effect and hydrostatic pressure.

The Clay Bowl Effect

When your foundation is dug a lot of soil is removed around the area and has to be filled back in later. This means that the soil immediately around your foundation is looser than the soil farther away that was never dug up. Since water likes to choose the path of least resistance, it will collect in the looser soil around your foundation instead of the dense soil beyond. As this process occurs the soil will begin to put more and more pressure on the foundation walls, eventually causing cracks.

Hydrostatic Pressure

When the loosely packed soil around your home becomes soaked it expands and puts pressure on your foundation walls. This can cause cracks over time. When these cracks appear the water will make its way through them and into your basement. The water will also try to enter through other openings like those found around pipes and windows.
